The 5×5 rule is a principle that helps people in putting their time and energy into the things that matter more. It states that you shouldn’t spend more than 5 minutes worrying about something that won’t matter in 5 years. The reason behind the 5 by 5 rule origin is because it’s so easy to get overwhelmed with our emotions whenever something inconvenient happens and it can affect the work and decisions we make for the rest of the day. 

We can accomplish more when our mind is not clouded with unnecessary thoughts. So read along if you want to learn how the 5×5 rule can start changing your life for the better.

Think Long Term

When you are mad or your emotions have spiked up, take 5 minutes to yourself to process what you are feeling and after that you let it go. There is so much power that we can possess when we learn how to let go. Thinking of the long term approach allows you to get some distance from the issue at hand, giving you a better perspective and decision making process.

Can you recall a time when you lashed out about something that wasn’t really a big deal? Now try to imagine how helpful it can be if we think long term.

Emotions Can Hold You Back

One thing’s for sure about the 5×5 rule, it’s not just about burying our frustrating emotions because that can lead to a more serious problem in the future. Instead, what we want is to really feel our dilemma and process the less important things in a shorter period of time so that we don’t drain ourselves. 

Emotions can hold you back in doing business for the day. There are meetings, projects, and clients that need our undivided attention to thrive in our business. When our emotions get a hold of us, it can be difficult to be the best version of ourselves. 

The Energy and Time You Lose Does Not Come Back

There are obvious things that we still need to remind ourselves about every day. One very great example of this is that– You can’t change the past. As humans, it’s in our nature to feel stuck in the past and regret the things that we could or could not have done. As a result of this, your mind is focused too much on that moment that you can’t think of other important things.

But here’s what you need to tell yourself if you want to live out the 5×5 rule: The energy and time you lose do not come back. So, why do we still waste our time and energy? The answer is we do not see that our time is the most powerful asset we possess as investors and business owners. It’s so easy to waste something of zero worth, but your time has so much value and it is the greatest tool you can use in prospering your business and changing your life for the better.

Put Your Problems into Perspective

Stress makes it difficult to see things in perspective. Whether in our personal lives, relationships, and business, it’s a default to turn things into a really big deal. Then, there’s the urge to fix everything right away.  

But you have to be reasonable because you only have 24 hours in a day. You cannot do everything in one day. You cannot prevent all of the inconvenient things from happening. Especially if you are trying to go very fast on building your business, if you go over your head in doing different projects, things will just fall down. Take down one problem at a time to avoid overwhelming yourself.

Think 5 Positive Things Out of the Bad Situation

To help ease your mind, a pro tip is to think of 5 positive things out of a bad situation. It’s an optimistic approach to handling problems that won’t matter in the next 5 years. When you think of the positive things, you are reminded that the bad situation is just temporary. You can reflect on past similar scenarios and reminisce how you were able to overcome those instances. 

It’s also good to have an accountability partner that will remind you of the 5×5 rule. The issue with everyone is that we are very good at seeing what needs to be improved on somebody else and very bad at recognizing it on our own. You need people that will help you in changing your life for the better.


The next time you are in a bad situation, ask yourself these questions. Take a moment to ask yourself how long have I been stressing with this scenario? Why is it that I am still hung up over this situation?  Will it matter in 5 years? If it won’t, then do not let it take a hold of you too much and let it go.

The 5×5 rule is a simple concept that can really help you in changing your life for the better. It’s a principle that we must turn into a habit if we want to build legacies that last.
